Admittance Procedures for Home Schoolers to attend Virginia Boys State.

It shall be the responsibility of the home schoolers parents to contact the local American Legion Post when nominees are selected from their respective high schools, and private schools.  Further, it shall be the responsibility of the said parents to find out dates and times of interviews by the local American Legion Post's Boys State committee.

Under no circumstances will a home schooler be accepted at Virginia Boys State without first having his eleventh grade courses and unity completed and approved by the Division superintendent, his/her Assistant, or such designated person.

The Division Superintendent, his/her Assistant, or such designated person, in the public school system in a written document, must indicate that the home schooler has or will have by June 30, successfully completed the curriculum courses of a public school eleventh grader consisting of the following course and unity as set forth in 22.1-245-1, Code of Virginia:

bulletThree (3) units of English
bulletTwo (2) Math courses
bulletTwo (2) units of Science
bulletTwo (2) units of Social Studies
bulletVirginia and United States History

bulletWorld History or World Geography
bulletTwo (2) units of Health and Physical Education
bulletOne (1) unit of Fine arts
bulletOne (1) unit of Vocational training or two (2) electives
bulletFive (5) other electives

The above documentation of courses taken and units completed containing the verification of the same can either be sent by the school officials to the local American Legion Post commander or Adjutant, or the parents of the home schooler can in person present the document to the Post Commander or Adjutant.  Names of these Legionnaires can be obtained by contacting the American Legion Headquarters, Department of Virginia, at (804) 353-6606.

No other forms of academic achievement will be acceptable for determining the eligibility in becoming a home school Boys State nominee.

Parents of home schoolers following the "Religious Oriented Curriculum" route, must be judged by the same academic course level of attainment as that of eleventh graders attending public schools.

Parents of home schoolers may also want to include along with the public school's course and unity documentation a summary of the home schoolers record in sports, various test scores, organizational membership, community involvement, patriotism, scholarship and leadership examples.

Home schoolers are welcomed in the Virginia Boys State program.  They must, however, adhere to the same academic level of those eleventh graders selected by the public school faculty in order to become nominees.  Of the thousands of qualified eleventh graders, only a limited number are nominees, and due to program limitations, of this number only between eight hundred (800) to one thousand (1000) become Boys State Delegates in the Commonwealth of Virginia.
